The Different Types of Anxiety

There are many misconceptions on anxiety. There are different types of anxiety that you should know about.

Anxiety/Panic Attack

The Different Types of Anxiety

This is the type of disorder that brings upon unexpected attacks that cripple you with fear for no reason. There are various factors that cause these attacks, however, the victim is oblivious to what those are.

The symptoms of anxiety/panic attack are:

  • Dizziness
  • Feeling faint
  • Irregular breathing - usually increased breathing (hyperventilating)
  • Rapid palpitations
  • A feeling of impending doom that is going to happen to oneself
  • De-realized (feeling as if you're dreaming or disconnected with reality)

The difference between a(n) anxiety/panic attack and anxiety/panic disorder:
If you're always experiencing anxiety/panic attacks, then your condition is classified as a disorder. If it just happens once, then it's just an attack.

Victims who suffer from this disorder usually feel as if they're dying, having a heart attack, or feel that they're going crazy. These attacks can happen at any time, even when the victim is sleeping.

This condition is very crippling to the victim and can affect their daily activities. If a victim experiences an attack while driving his/her car, the victim will later have an "Avoidant Behaviour" - the victim will avoid driving in future thinking that this will prevent future attacks. This can be true for any types of activities such as having a haircut, watching movies, having a dental checkup, taking the public transport, etc.

Social Anxiety Disorder

The Different Types of Anxiety

This disorder strikes when a victim is in a social setting. It is usually generalized or termed as Social Phobia and can be very crippling and destructive since it happens whenever the victim is in a social setting such as going to work, going to school, or the movies.

The victim of this disorder usually feels self-conscious and feels that they are unwelcome in social groups. Their mind is usually occupied with worry that they are being judged by others or strangers, or being watched by others.

The symptoms of Social Anxiety Disorder:

  • Sweating excessively
  • Trembling/shaking
  • Unable to speak or speaks jittery
  • Feeling uncomfortable in their stomach or abdomen area

When a social event is being scheduled, the victim usually worries in advance and by the time the event comes around, the victims symptoms will be worst.

Victims in this classified group are usually found resorting to alcohol or drugs to cope with their condition.

General Anxiety Disorder

The Different Types of Anxiety

Victims of this disorder are usually constantly worrying every single minute of the day, thus affecting their daily activities. They usually have a problem trying to control or stop the worries.

The common symptoms are:

  • Irritability
  • Fatigue/Restlessness
  • Nervousness

While it's not as debilitating as other disorders, it's still a serious condition.

The Relation

The above disorders, although different in symptoms, are fueled by one cause.
