NLP for Panic Attacks
#17 – NLP
What is NLP in the first place? NLP stands for Neuro-Lingustic Programming.
“NLP is the practice of understanding how people organise their thinking, feeling, language and behaviour to produce the results they do. NLP provides people with a methodology to model outstanding performances achieved by geniuses and leaders in their field. “– NLP Academy, http://www.nlpacademy.co.uk/WhatisNLP.asp
It’s a very-very powerful tool. If you learn to master this tool and apply it in your life, you can attain great achievements and success easily.
I’ve read stories of people who are afraid of heights. After they have learnt NLP, they could actually skydive without fear! They are even stories of people who were flat-broke; after making use of NLP, they became millionaires.
That IS the power of NLP.
I will share with you 2 basic NLP techniques that you can use to help your panic attacks or even improve your life!
NLP Technique #1 - ANCHORING
Have you ever listened to a song and all out of a sudden you recall someone or something? Or you smelled some muffins at a bakery and it immediately reminded you of your grandmother or mother who used to bake muffins for you?
Yes, that is the power of Anchoring.
The Anchoring Technique was based from a Scientist’s experiment. He rang a bell as he fed some dogs. The dogs salivated when they saw the food. The scientist became fascinated and continued this procedure a few times.
After a while, whenever he rang the bell the dogs would salivate even when the food wasn’t in sight!
Here are the steps for you to follow to create an Anchor:
- Find a quiet spot and relax. Now remember of a time when you’re very-very relax and happy. It could be when your love one and you are holdings hands and taking a stroll in a beautiful park.
- Remember that scene vividly and in detail as if you’re there again. Remember them vividly and in detail!
- As you remember the feelings very strongly now, do a gesture like squeezing your thumb with your index finger or making a fist.
- Repeat step 2 and 3 a few times to make this anchor effective and strong.
Congratulations! You’ve just created an Anchor!
Should you experience a panic attack or having the magnifying effect, execute your gesture. This will release the relaxing and happy feeling that you’ve anchored or attached to the gesture.
NLP Technique #2 – PATTERN INTERUPT
Imagine you’re quarreling with your love one. The quarrel became hotter and hotter - both of you begin shouting at each other. Suddenly, your love one hugs or kisses you unexpectedly. You became silent and shock by that sudden gesture. The quarrel ended abruptly.
Try this: the next time you go to a restaurant and when a waitress or waiter comes to you, do not make an order, instead question them back. I am sure they will go blank.
Waitresses and Waiters are programmed to greet customers and wait for customers order – it becomes a pattern as time goes by. If something unexpectedly happens (like asking a question back to them), their minds will go blank because it’s totally unexpected – you have broke the pattern.
In my opinion, panic attacks seem to follow a pattern. You start to get worried about something, then the magnifying effect happens, then the symptoms start coming and the next thing you know a full-blown panic attack happens.
Perhaps that is why the Distraction Technique or other Techniques works so well.
Next time when you feel you’re in the panic attack process, do something totally unexpected. Like smiling and laughing hysterically or doing jumping-jacks (but of course, at a right time and at the right place)! It may sound crazy but it works!
This is just one of the pattern interrupt techniques. There are a few more but it’s rather difficult to explain it unless you’ve went through the basics of NLP.

Remember – NLP is a very-very powerful tool. I recommend that you master it if you can. You will find ease in getting great achievements and success once you’ve mastered it.
