FAQ and Advice
"Should I be on Antidepressants like prozac, lexapro, .etc?"
That is one of the most common question asked by panic attack and anxiety sufferers.
Antidepressants DO help. Ignore the negative comments and publicity antidepressants had. Their benefits outweigh the side effects.
There is nothing wrong with taking antidepressants like prozac. Most people are afraid to be judged as "crazy" for taking antidepressants. But who cares? Why should you care about other people's opinion? It is YOUR health and YOUR choice.
The suicide reports are largely over-blown in the media. In fact, the suicide cases are due to 'special' cases. If you communicate well with your doctor, you will experience little to no side effects from medications.
Some people even ask what is the best antidepressant or what is the best benzodiapine. This would be hard to tell as your doctor needs to do a trial-and-error to see which drugs benefit you more with less or without side effects. The most common antidepressant your doctor or psychiatrist will prescribe is prozac (Fluoxetine), and they usually prescribe it at 20mg (to be taken everyday). Then, the doctor will either taper up the dosage or change your medication if you do not experience any benefits. If there's progress in your condition, the doctor will taper down the dosage (e.g: from 20mg per day to 10mg per day, then from 10mg per day to 5mg per day).
And of course, another common question people like to ask is, "how long does it take antidepressant to work?" or "how long does it take prozac to work?" It largely depends on your body. Although the doctor or those who are on the medication will tell you that it takes a month to work, sometimes it can be earlier. For instance, when I was first prescribe prozac it took me just a week. I've known of people who experienced the benefits within a few days after starting their medication.
Only take benzodiapines when necessary. Do NOT abuse them. Take only when you experience a really severe panic attack.
Lastly, if you wish so you can always go for CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy) to overcome your panic attacks.
There are online programs like Panic Away and The Linden Method which has helped many panic attack and anxiety sufferers to overcome their condition. You can read up the review of the 2 programs here: Panic Away Review and Linden Method Review
